Tim O’Reilly asked me if he ran over my dog. [I don't own a dog. I do have birds.] Who thinks about stuff like that? Was he trying to be funny? Or…? Anyway here’s what I said that got him so defensive:

I was excited to read the attack piece on @timoreilly by @evgenymorozov until I realized it was like a bad book report on software politics. [link]

Blending the smug-rich-guy-meme-maker of today‘s @timoreilly with the biz-shilling-publishing-hype-man 90s version is lazy @evgenymorozov [link]

So I’m really sharing my distaste for a disappointing article written about O’Reilly, which (as I interpreted it) started with a deceptively easy goal: expose the mushy hype at the core of the publishing magnate’s thinking by considering his own words. A goal at which I thought it mostly failed [when I despaired of it being any good and clicked away halfway though.] After O’Reilly’s lame reply I continued:

“@timoreilly: @pacificpelican @evgenymorozov So did I run over your dog too?” No. I just don’t like the way you launder & amplify bad ideas. [link]

Which is true. Though I would have hoped that classics scholar O’Reilly would have worked in a Cerberus reference when talking about dogs. Anyway I continued:

I stopped caring about what @timoreilly says a long time ago. I had hoped @evgenymorozov would convince other smart people to do the same. [link]

Instead the article by @evgenymorozov was so poorly constructed and easily part-refuted by @timoreilly from his perch at G+ that I wondered. [link]

I don’t really care, as I said, and I think that eventually a lot of thinking people are going to realize what he’s up to. But in the Google+ post he wrote linking to it, O’Reilly went as far as to say he found the Morozov article “entertaining and informative.” Two things he consistently fails to be.

The Old Reader: says it’s based on, well, the old [Google] Reader. Imports feeds (supposedly–has taken days for me and is still not there) based on XML file exported via Google Takeout.

The river downtown in Chicago – an iconic location, a difficult photographic target

I wandered around East Wacker Drive in Chicago when staying at a nearby hotel recently. Hoping to meet Jessica during a break from her conference, I walked across the Chicago River on the Michigan Avenue bridge and found her at the U of C conference facility’s cafeteria. When she was due to return for the afternoon sessions, I walked back to the hotel on the other side of the river and, despite the sprinkling of rain that prevented me from bringing my Nikon camera, I used my iPhone 4S to capture a few photos.
Some of the photos I took were interesting from a technical perspective–for example, an upriver shot was not at all beautiful aesthetically given the appalling architecture on the north bank there before the bend but which still revealed an interesting artifact of the 4S’s depth of field and where it ends along the river where detail of buildings offers a rich test of the issue where many deep backgrounds offer only gradients and sameness.
But there were a few I liked because they looked good, more or less. The images are compelling to me–but I have had to sadly reject the only photo in the group that was lined up the way I liked, because it was too dark and some 45 degrees off of where it should have been aimed–but that would have made it mis-aligned too. I don’t know.

I wondered what happened to the stock manipulation claims. Rene Ritchie of imore.com tweeted this in response to me: “Stock manipulation seems to be continuing though, if yesterday’s Foxconn story is any indicator.”

my CMS code remained secure despite a hail of spam

I left a paste site online on my web site for some six months where anyone could paste text. (It has been shut down in the last day.) Some 37000 posts were made, and from what I could tell they were overwhelmingly spam messages. (The “paste” concept of the site meant that the spam was never displayed via the front of the site, so the spam messages essentially just went in a hole where no one could see them.) But here’s the cool part–from what I can tell none of these posts were used in any effective hacking attempts.
That’s right–left out on a hostile web, the design for my free PHP CMS proved secure enough to keep those particular posts from causing any kind of text-injection-style hack. I’m inclined to think that for a lot of projects using text files [like I did for this code] to store data can be a lot safer than using a SQL database.
Now this is only anecdotal–I would still like to see a though security audit of the CMS–but I think this project passed a critical test.
